Creative Tots Artist Of The Month – Romare Bearden

This month’s in class Art Enrichment took us on a journey exploring the artwork of Romare Bearden.

Romare Bearden is among the preeminent artists of his generation. His powerful works represent the places where he lived and worked: the rural South; northern cities, principally Pittsburgh and New York’s Harlem; and the Caribbean island of St. Martin.  Throughout his career Bearden also made forays into abstraction, usually with musical associations. His work  includes not only collages and Projections (photostats) for which he is best known but also a selection of watercolors, gouaches, and oils, many of which have rarely been exhibited.

Take a look at the work of Romare Bearden below.  You can also click here to visit the Romare Bearden Foundation to explore the influence Bearden had on art and community.

Our Art Tots discovered all about Bearden’s work.  We discussed how some artists use recycled materials to create their artwork.  Sometimes making something new out of discarded pictures and/or objects can create the most beautiful artwork.  Art Tots explored the collages Bearden made of the people and places he encountered on a daily basis.  In this we discussed how “Urban Artists” often found the most interesting subjects by simply looking out their own window.  We also discussed how each of us have the same number of eyes, noses, mouths and ears but we are all unique.  Art Tots discovered that the world would be a very boring place if everyone looked exactly the same.

With this thought in mind, Art Tots created this month’s art project as a collage of facial features from all of our preschool friends.  Preschool and Pre-K classes explored the correct proportion and placement of facial features as the Early 3 and Toddler classes concentrated on the abstractions of the face.  Take a look below Romare Bearden’s examples to see the outstanding work of our Art Tots!  They are a talented bunch!!

Don’t forget that I am holding on to our Art Tots work from in class Art Enrichment to display in our fabulous Art Show in March.  Mark your calendars for this unforgettable event.

Creative Tots Artist Of The Month – Franz Marc

Our Art Tots have been working hard this month in art class.  I was lucky enough to visit each class room and share the paintings this month’s artist, Franz Marc.  We discussed the how artist can create artwork in any style or color they chose.  Art is a path to show how you are feeling, what you are thinking or just what moved you at the moment.  Does a horse have to be painted brown?  If I don’t paint it brown how can I choose the color I would like for it to be?

We had the help of a great book by Eric Carle, The Artist That Painted A Blue Horse.  A book inspired by our artist of the month, Franz Marc.  Art Tots used this inspiration to create animal prints.  We charged our brayer and rolled our plate before printing our animals on the beautiful patterned backgrounds.  Below are examples of the work by Franz Marc followed by a examples of our printmaking inspired by the artist.

Franz Marc was born in Germany in 1880.  He loved to paint animals in bright and unusual colors.  At the time some traditionalist critics objected to his new ideas and his unconventional paintings, stylized in form and unrealistic in color.  But Marc and some other like-minded artists formed an art group that was highly influential in the modern and expressionist movements.  His paintings of blue horses are particularly famous.  Franz Marc was killed in World War I.

Creative Tots Artist Of The Month – Hans Hoffman

Hello Everyone!  The year is winding down up but our talented artists are still winding up for some wonderful paintings.  Our artist for April is Hans Hoffman.  Hoffman was born in 1880 in Bavaria.  His path in life started him in government but he ended up one of the most renown Abstract Artists.  Hans Hoffman developed the “push and pull” theory in which he believed depth could be created simply by color, texture and shape.  Experimenting with this theory lead him to create many beautiful paintings with loose expressive backgrounds surrounding large flat squares and rectangles.

Creative Tots Artist of the Month – Jasper Johns

Art has come to Creative Tots!  This week we are starting Art Classes within your Creative Tots schedule.  Each month we will pick a new Artist to take us on our journey through color, line, shape and form.  October brings us our first Artist, Jasper Johns.  He is one of my favorites as he is able to take everyday symbols such as numbers, letters and flags and create colorful works of art with his paint.  Johns is an American Artist born in Augusta, GA in 1930 and still lives and works in New York.  To find out more visit and/or Google Search his name.  Take a look below to view a few examples of his work and be watching later this week to view examples of some of our Creative Tots Artists.  All of our Jasper Johns inspired work will be on display at our Totstober Halloween Night.
