Our goal at Creative Tots is to engage and educate your child. Every activity is an opportunity for young children to develop knowledge, skill and a positive attitude about learning. We implement a unique preschool curriculum carefully designed to balance the traditional and the innovative, prompting the enthusiasm necessary for your child to excel in the many years of school ahead. As much as it is true that we should not deny children the path to learning they seek through play, what develops their natural curiosities and interests is when they experience success, increase self-confidence and discover their strengths.

Language Arts

The emergence of language and literacy in children is a dynamic process. When children are immersed in an environment where oral and written communications are valued, they have the motivation, the modeling and the sense of purpose to master language. Wide exposure to print and to developing concepts about its forms and functions is critical at this age. Classrooms filled with meaningful print, language and literacy play, storybook reading and writing allow children to understand linearity and directionality as well as build the concept of story. Through our literature-based curriculum our teachers provide well-integrated, developmentally appropriate instruction for children to develop skills in print awareness, alphabet knowledge, phonologic recognition and foreign language. As a result, the children experience the power of literature while fostering the confidence associated with life-long literacy.

Fine Arts

Creativity as a discipline is often overlooked. It is essential that as the humanities become the prominent focus of intellectual progress we do not educate our children out of their creative capacity. Kids will always take a chance and unless they are prepared to be wrong it is difficult realize anything original. It is for this reason that we coordinate our art enrichment around celebrated artists such as Van Gogh, Da Vinci and Cassatt. The children learn about their specific works and have the opportunity to explore the mediums of paint, portraits, photography and design.

Social & Emotional

Children need the devotion and appreciation of adults and peers in their lives. They also need to feel confident in their own abilities. Creative Tots is a warm, caring, and supportive atmosphere where we welcome each child’s individuality, nurture their self-confidence, promote good work habits and develop appropriate social skills. Learning is an inherently joyful process and that is what Creative Tots fosters.

Physical Development

Rather than treating our bodies as simply transport for our brains, we feel that intelligence is visual, auditory as well as kinesthetic. Preschool children often need to move in order to think. As a result, we incorporate music and movement into our everyday curriculum. Whether it is dramatic play, exploring our outdoor play area, yoga for kids or interacting with visiting performance art professionals, we certainly keep your child moving.

Young children need time to explore math using concrete materials they can manipulate. The ability to recognize logical patterns in the world around them develops a practical knowledge of potentially difficult numerical concepts. Our curriculum allows routine situations to become thoughtfully designed activities that encourage counting, measuring, patterning and problem-solving. A quality early mathematics curriculum establishes the confidence necessary for further development in logical reasoning.

Children are naturally curious about the world around them. It is important to utilize this need to explore and experience the natural world through hypothesis and prediction, observation, collecting data over time and formulating conclusions. Our preschool program provides authentic science experiences drawing on visits by experts in the community as well as following the actual life cycle of a butterfly and frog in the classroom. This unique experience to engage and manipulate our science materials fosters a sense of awareness that teaches children to enjoy and appreciate their surroundings.

Pre-K Program

Today, kindergarten has greatly evolved. It is no longer the traditional experience of alphabet songs and finger-painting. Kindergarten-readiness does not just happen. Young children do not automatically acquire the knowledge and skills they need for a positive kindergarten experience. Parents are continually motivated by early testing, new teaching methods and recent research findings to ensure their child a firm academic foundation. Creative Tots recognizes that children who have received advanced preschool exposure maintain this advantage moving forward. We take pride in our innovative program and ever-expanding and evolving curriculum offerings. Children are like wet cement, anything that falls on them makes an impression. Byfocusing on academic fundamentals in this final year before kindergarten, we place your child in the center of their own learning experiences that will challenge and nurture them into successful learners for the years of school ahead.

About Creative Tots Pre-K Program (for children entering Kindergarten the following Fall with one year of previous preschooling)

The Pre-K program requires a 3-Day minimum enrollment on Monday/Wednesday/Friday (unless doing the Preschool / Pre-K split) to focus on early reading lessons and strategies for your child.  Once this M/W/F requirement is met, an additional 1 or 2-Day enrollment option on Tuesday/Thursday is available with focus on in-depth Math instruction. It is highly recommended to enroll in a 4 or 5-Day program choice. **The morning Pre-K spots are reserved for our students choosing the 4 and 5-Day program option. If you would like to choose the 3-Day option, you are by default moved to the afternoon session. Tuesdays and Thursdays are also reserved for those doing the Preschool / Pre-K split with the late Summer birthdays. This will allow the children to focus on Math skills while note being overwhelmed by the reading and writing program.

Creative Tots uses an early reading program that emphasizes specific reading strategies that will help your child to become a strong reader.  The week’s curriculum is structured around a three-day learning sequence.  Day one focuses on introducing a new text and high-frequency site words that are critical for young readers to learn.  Day two re-emphasizes comprehension and integrates the site words into individual writing activities.  Day three reviews the week’s activities and summarizes with a group writing activity.  All of the week’s lessons are then integrated into the home environment, encouraging families to work on practicing site words in fun and meaningful ways. Research shows that ages 4, 5 and 6 are crucial for children to master early reading.  After the age of 6, children are playing “catch-up” to cement their literacy fundamentals.

Because foundation in mathematical concepts is essential for success in school, we have added Day four and Day five (Tuesdays/Thursdays) to focus on mathematic concepts. As each year brings greater depth to the children’s understanding of mathematical study, the final year of pre-school is when most children exhibit the ability to comprehend complex logical sequencing, order and progression.  This leads to counting, measuring, patterning and mathematical problem solving.  It is a critical developmental stage that must be advanced.  Specific playful activities in everyday situations allow children the opportunity to observe, question, collect information, communicate ideas and connect math to the familiar world around them.  If you wish to extend your child’s math studies, we recommend that you add this fourth and/or fifth day of Pre-K. These extra days of Pre-K will allow your child to discover mathematics through many different hands-on, minds-on activities.
